Gulf is not owned by any individual country: Iran

Muscat -

Iran’s Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi refuted the recent remarks by an Iranian general who asserted his country’s ownership over the Gulf. “The Gulf is not owned by any individual country. It belongs to all the neighbouring countries that surround the Gulf,” said Salehi in response to a question from Muscat Daily.

In comments last week, reported widely by the international media, the chief of staff of Iran’s armed forces General Hassan Firouzabadi had claimed that the ‘Gulf had belonged to Iran forever’. The GCC had promptly condemned the statement as ‘agressive’.

“The comments [of General Firouzabadi] were misrepresented in the media. I think he didn’t make those remarks but even if we assume that he did, we still refute the same,” said Salehi.
