In his remarks to Muscat Daily over phone, Talib Hilal said, “It is a bad result, not only for me, but for Oman. We did not expect to go out in the group stage. Our group had only three teams and we started well by winning out first match against Thailand.
“Against Lebanon, the boys did not play well to my expectations. Sometimes, you give them a plan, but the players execute it on the pitch differently. We conceded two goals in the final minutes of the match, with the winner coming in the dying seconds.”
The Oman coach added, “Lebanon's players exploited our team's mistakes and scored as many as three goals to win the match. This is a game, and we have to accept the result.”
Talib Hilal rued his team missing adequate match-situation preparations, saying, “We have to now sit and analyse the reasons and the Oman Football Association (OFA) should seriously think of how to support the team.
“Our preparations have not been up to the desired level. Since our participation in the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in Portugal two years back, we have hardly played friendlies against quality teams. It was only recently that we hosted Switzerland for two-match series and prior to that we played against Bahrain.”
He added, “For three or four months, our players sat idle after the Asian Beach Games [in Vietnam in September-October] where we won silver. We have to play many more friendly games and take part in more international tournaments if we wish to make our boys best in Asia again.”
